Unlike my old XR250 (1994) which had a paper element oil filter, the older XL just has a wire mesh oil filter, at the bottom of the sump. :rolleyes:

So, as the bike is quite new to me, and been off the road since 1996, with 18000 miles I decided to check it out.

Its a bit of a pain, coz you need to remove the r/h clutch casing to access it, which means footrest, kickstart, clutch & auto-decomp cables, sump guard, etc :pale:

Anyhow, got to it and pulled it out, and it was nigh on clean - just a few bits of gundge - which is probably clutch material :confused:

So, come the putting it back together bit - new gasket, copper-slip the bolts - and only bit to note is hold the kickstart auto de-compression lever back (anti-clockwise) whilst assembling :thumbup:

Re-filled with semi-synth motorcycle oil & thats it for another 8000 miles (as per manual) :teeth:

8,000 miles without an oil filter???
No bloody chance!!!
Cheap, mineral oil, changed every thousand miles for me dude!!!

No, No, Noooooooooooooo, thats 8000 miles for the mesh filter clean - I do oil about every 1000mile, or 2000 max :D
