Hello troops thanks for the previous help much appreciated, now I'm wondering is the front sprocket meant to have some play in it, and what is the correct way round please im guessing the flat side has the retaining clamp as the way I found it other day it had the ridge facing out with the clamp on but the bolts were so tightened up that I reckon that's why the clamp was bent and snapped in half

On my 1997 SLR the front sprocket is not a really tight fit on the shaft, it does rock a little from top to bottom
Movement , I always thought it should be tighter but I've now done 35k miles and still about the same and on
It's 3rd front sprocket.

Brilliant thanks for that I just put a small drop of thread lock on shaft and sprocket does not move, obviously when I replace it I probably will have to heat gun it off or carefully cut sprocket
