When I bought my 650 last month I only had 1 key with the bike, can I just get another key cut like I did with my 600s. Silly Q I know but I didn't know if the HISS system on the ignition has anything to do with keys and things

Yes it does.. You can buy the blank key from David Silver (make sure you get one with a chip in it for HISS bikes) and get it cut in any shop but you then need to reprogramme the bikes CPU to accept it as a valid key. Some of the earlier bikes this could be done by grounding a wire and following a procedure but others needed the dealer tool to do it. If your bike needs the dealer tool then its probably as cheap to get the dealer to do the whole job

Regardless of whichever method you HAVE to have a working key before you start so don't run with just one working key as if you lose you will never be able to add another key and then it's a new CPU for the bike and that is reportedly a grand.

There is also a maximum of 4 keys that can be programmed to the bike and once they have been done no more can be added. It's not possible to remove keys to free up space.

I understand that some of the more enterprising locksmiths specialising in car/bike keys can now "clone" the key's chip ... which may be cheaper and easier to arange than using a dealer. There's quite a lot on this subject at the Deauville forum ....
:- for example.... Deauville Owners UK • Login'd add that I've never tried - it's a project for the future!

I think a key is around £25, couple of quid to get it cut. I was charged £35 for programming but have heard up to £60! Might be worth a couple of calls first ;)

To clarify Gordons last paragraph, 4 keys can be programmed to the HISS at any one time, however, as soon a programming takes place all keys are cleared except the one being used, up to a further three can then be added.

Don't put it off. You are stuffed without your one and only working key......
