Sharrie, Mike and myself decided to ride to Portugal on a trio of mighty Beemers for Sharrie and my daughter to practice riding half ton beasties across the Portuguese hills and forests.
We headed down to sunny Portsmouth in what was a start of a hot dry fortnight. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1344769096.634220.jpg

Our crossing point is the old corsairs town of Saint Malo. Here we headed south Rennes, Nantes where mikes Gps decided it was not going to play any more and left Mike playing piggy in the middle between Sharrie and myself.for the rest of the trip. With the air temperature rising we stopped for our first night at a nice camp site directed by the Garmin gods near Saujon north of Royan.
Day two we headed South into our nemesis Bordeaux home of traffic jams and stifling hot roads, and this year it also threw in humidity with a little rain. After Bordeaux we headed on the boring 85KM road to BAyonne here they celebrated so bully thing with red scarfs a blocking the roads in the town . We swung left an headed up over the lower parts of the pyrenees. The road I found over the hills was loose gravel and patch tar mark with switch backs with adverse cambers and very flaky edges. My daughter asked me to stop having fun so MIke and Sharrie could catch up errr NO. When we got to the top mike took some photos and down we went again this time on the Spanish side where the roads are better, the switch backs where so tight I was in first going down hill passing rocky hair pins with my daughter pointing out she could se insects on the rocks as we past so close. Or second night camp was again somewhere the Garmin gods decided near the N121a north of Pamplona.

With Sharrie pushing pace we headed A1 Vitoria Gasteiz, N1 Burgos, being a Sunday the going was good progress was made even when both Sharrie and mine GPS messed around in Burgos we headed too Valladolid on an empty road only stopping at local garages for hydration and ice cream ImageUploadedByTapatalk1344772234.521966.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1344772261.546211.jpg

After Valladolid we headed west to Zamora and a campsite with a bar and pool. Following the Garmin Gods it took us down some unpaved roads to Mikes dislike so I checked with Sharrie to confirm I was on the right road and opened the throttle making dust. When we arrived we met our travelling friends ants every camp we visited senior ant also came along with a few of his family.
After Zamora we headed South along the back roads for about hundred miles and joined the duel carriageway in to Portugal A62. When we arrived in POrtugal we plugged in our final location and headed on the new portuguese motor way with electronic ANPR readers but apparently you have to hire a box to register your passing of these toll points, or you can buy pre paid points 20 or 40 euros for each vehicle. I opted for using the new motor ways rather than the mountain roads just to cover the distance. When we arrived at lagres du beira it was back to riding on dirt tracks because once your off the main roads all the inter village and back roads are dirt and gravel tracks brilliant for me. Not so good for Sharrie and MIke.

Our lodging had a pool breakfast and dinner. Cooked for us and we ate in the local garage. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1344773700.531380.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1344773737.822670.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1344773773.682580.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1344773822.406751.jpg

Whilst the girls rode Horses I went up the local mountain Torra 2000 meters I went via Seia up the hill to Manteigas on this road I got board I love hair pins and mountain tracks but believe me it had to many to close together to really enjoy the road. Have a look on google maps. Riding up to Torra was outstanding riding on cliff roads with no barriers in stunning heat and visibility.

Before we came down I checked out all the bikes as you would brakes, tyres oils and waters. Sharrie had 4mm of rear brake pads left but by the time we got to Portugal she ha worn them away again

So after many phone calls looking for a BMW dealer, With no help from BMW assistance. I managed to find one on the internet in Coimbra bombra BMW who ordered the parts for me with out even a credit card better than the UK. So the following day I Rode through the mountains to pick up the parts and the. Four minutes for me to fit them.

And in to the holiday traffic of Biarritz and back in to BAyonne across to Dax and the back roads to a camp site south of Mont de Marsan to a camp site with a bar and a village with no food so we had to eat our emergency food pasta, Chorizo, tomatoes, onions, beer,Coke and ICe cream only 200 miles covered this day.
Bordeaux being such an arse ache I plotted a route around taking in Vin yards tight ridges and small roads avoiding all major roads through the forestry and on to Libourne and on to the FRench motorway system to make up lost time and blasting up to Nantes for 15 Euros. Because of the distance and time we arrived at campsites and nearly every campsite was having a party so sleep was sometime difficult. For me up early as normal with the chickens and sparrows walking around, watering the greenery and whispering .we found most of the french sites you had to supply your own toilet paper.
As we headed up to Saint Malo we then pitched up for two days to explore the old city we camped on an old Roman/GErman fort right on top of the ferry terminal well worth a visit stunning food and clear seas for swimming. And there is a cafe called timothys with the biggest plate of musells and proper chips followed by the biggest slice of cake.

Brilliant trip riding. Portugal for off roading. Saint Malo for food and culture
