I’ve used Double Take and Monkey Island before but both have let me down in the past with either wrong diagnosis of a bent frame or not doing the work when asked to then doing it as a rush job leaving things loose.

At present all it need doing is valve clearance and new plugs and possibly a tune up since may be running a bit rich with the K&N and Arrow can on it but still not sure where to get it done in the Woolston area of Southampton at a sensible price.

Also can’t do the plugs myself since still recovering from reconstructive shoulder surgery so don’t have the strength to undo bolts.

Hi Grendel,

glad to hear your recovering okay:thumbright:, I`ll second Barneys in Fareham used them last winter for a chain and sproket set fitment. Basically due to bad service regime on my part:( the rear axel bolt was siezed solid and he sorted it with a few choice words like " use that bloody grease more often".

So for a valve check and plug swap he would be okay, but doesnt do engine mixture checks apart from plug check but would know someone who could do a dyno check.

He charges around £40 a hour labour so a bit cheaper than the Honda dealers etc, how old are the plugs as I leave for mine for 20k then change But never notice much difference, the Airfilter would have weakend the mixture not richened it, is the airfilter clean? does it use more fuel than normal?

he also does bike collection if that helps .

The plugs are years old. The bike was standing in a friend’s garage for a couple of years before he sold it to me then in the last few years I’ve had it I never got around to changing plugs. The K&N was cleaned and re-oiled last week. And I did an oil/filter change on it in November.

Mind you it could just need new plugs?

The valve clearance check was just of interest since don’t think it has had one. The bike has no problems running just looses puff after about 65mph and if you shut the throttle off too quick it splutters.

Pro-Sport in Bitterne (top of the big hill with a roundabout...). They were Kawasaki and MuZ: don't know about now... Also do MOTs.

Or, Mayor's Motorcycles in Redbridge: they weren't bad, although they only ever helped me with engine tasks: a GT550 rebuild that went wrong..... In other words, no idea of their diagnostic skills. The are a HD custom shop by trade...

hi grendel,

Austin`s alp on this forum has done 60k + with no valve adjustment needed and most people find when checked they are okay.

if it were mine, I`d take it to Barneys @ Fareham and get its Oil changed along with a new oil filter. Then have the plugs changed and ask for old ones back to see hwo bad they are, and at the same time ask for the Airfilter to be cleaned and reoiled[ if required.

Ask him to listen to the valves for excess noise and if bad ask him to do them and have a quick test ride to report on lack of pull .

I bet its the plugs braking down under load and Dirty Air filter possibly. He has had a Africa twin and has a Varadero so knows the hondas inside out , bit of a gentle giant.

K&N is clean and the oil & filter was changed less than 2K miles ago. So really looks like it may just be old plugs. In which case I may leave it a bit longer until it needs more work or my shoulder can cope with it. Since rarely go above 60 while commuting around Southampton.
I presume it's a tank off job and is it worth going for Iridium plugs?

Main reason for change of mind being the cars steering rack is making noises so I expect that’s more a priority/expense at present depending what’s up with it.

The Tranny is still running ok it is just something I thought I may as well get done at some point. But thanks for all the suggestions.

Russ: Out of interest did your new carb balancing tool work?

carb balancing tool worked a treat, no more horrible vibes so worth getting the carbs balanced , BUT get the rest set up right first otherwise its a waste a money and time. resold mine on flebay so worked out it cost me £5 .

Its suprising how a little amount out an upset the running, mine was running fast on the front cyclinder so caused a small vibration. basically both cylinders were fighting each other.

Took the bike to Southampton Premier Motorcycles Ltd | We have full dealer services which include; finance, warranties, clothing, accessories, parts - basically all of your biking needs!

Down the road from me for new plugs to be fitted £47 with own plugs. Not bad I thought with the amount of hassle the plugs sound to be. Also they managed to change them without taking the tank off just LOTs of extension bars on the sockets

Seems to have a lot better acceleration and throttle response now it has new plugs compared the other plugs which must be around 5 years old.
