It think Brambell penchant for young boys was well known about. His co-star on Steptoe and Son, Harry H Corbett, made no secret that he didn't like Brambell and complained in his biography that while on tour (with S&S) Brambell regularly failed to turn up for performances and he was otherwise engaged with drink and young men.

Then of course there are the carry on brigaide

Kenny Williams and Charles Hawtrey will be next no doubt

I remember reading about that in the late 70's.
As for Kenny Williams, they said that he was ashamed of his sexuallity so stayed in the closet.
I just wonder when Kenny Everett will be named.
