There were quite a few of them bridging the stream. The looked like traps of some sort but seemed to lack any mechanism and all were empty.

So what are they

i'd say it was a rabbit trap ? but it looks like it could be used to catch most small mammals/rodents alive...
are there any mink in the area ?
if you look to the left of the cage the trap door is hinged over the trap roof and the flat cut out area on the log is for the bait and possibly the pressure switch as well.

it seems they are mink traps the cage prevents birds becoming trapped. i guess any other small critters are deemed as vermine as well??

They're put there by Scottish trolls who live under the planks. The little dears are so angered by a national government of two parties which together polled less than 20% in Scotland that they have set traps to catch passing LibCons.

If only it were that easy. :(

ermmmm  it's a minky masher fer mashing ya minkys.
Two of them lil criters turned inside-out make a nice pair of fluffy minky socks.
it is a mink trap.
minks are proper little bastards, they dont belong here and kill anything they can get hold of.
you can thank the "animal loving" anti fur lobby for releasing them. it rarely works out well when an animal is, however it happens, introduced into a new enviroment and it usually means the end of a lot of other species. grey squirrel, american crayfish, even rabbits were bought here by the normans and they are a bloody pest. 24 rabbits were taken to australia by some bonkers landowner who wanted his lawn to look like his native england, and in the 150yrs since theyve become an ecological disaster, so much so that the cure for myxamatosis is illegal and farmers are legally bound to control numbers on their land.
