I had thought that a bike fitted with an after market exhaust would mean the cat would be dumped, but apparently not? Is it easy/desirable to dump these things? Most gs bmws appear to.

What model?
On the Alps, the cat is part of the headers so replacing the silencer will leave the cat in place.

There is lots of old info on chopping them out of 650s, don't expect a transformation by doing so, although it isn'tactually a cat in the 650 unlike the 700.
