Replacing old jt sprocket with genuine honda front sprocket. Not sure which way round it goes- haynes says the flat side where metal and rubber meet on the same plane faces outwards (so you can see the '15' with the sprocket installed), I reckon its more logical that it should face inwards, just want to check haynes is right...

edit: Just found a couple of pics that agree with mr. haynes...



So i'm guessing he's right!

Off to change it :rolleyes:

yeh mr haynes is right;) the rubber act`s as a cush drive for the chain, well thats the common thinking on here anyway.

Hows the leaking oil hole split casing doing?

noticed its a 16 tooth, have you changed the back or just front? if front could you let us know by how much in top gear the revs drop at say 60mph, cheers

I have also only changed the front and it makes a standard chain Tight to start with. As for the difference in revs I have not noticed much but it does give a slight improvement on the MPG.
As for the correct way round I just replaced it facing the same as the original.

only some oem sprockets have the rubber, renthal, JT etc dont bother and ive only noticed a small increase in noise with aftermarket sprockets.

That is the right way round if you have left it on as in the picture,the number 16 showing outwards.
As for revs,it's different from 600 to 650(different gear ratio's) but on a 650 it will drop it about 250-300 rpm at around 70. If you fit a 47 rear tooth (standard on a 600, 48 standard on a 650) you'll see a 650 drop to about 4800 rpm at 70. If you go the full hog and drop to a 45 rear with a 16 front you'll see the rpm drop to about 4400-4500 at 70, standard 48/15 is about 5250-5300 rpm.

The rubber is just there to make the chain engagement smoother,the quietening is a by-effect,as the rubber wears the imprint of the chain is left in the rubber and loses the effect with age. The better quality the sprocket,JT or hagon etc, the quieter and smoother the chain is engaged by the sprocket teeth, the more rubbish sprockets seem to wear the chain faster and the splines on the output shaft.

The bit I patched with quicksteel is great. Unfortunately I still have 2 leaks but they're very small (~1 drop every 2 days between them)- one gathers on the drain bung, one comes from where the two casings meet in the middle. Thankfully the 2 casings leak is VERY slow so I'm not going to patch it because if I ever do want to separate the casings in the future it might be a bit interesting with the quicksteel in place. I haven't found the source of the drain bung leak, I suspect the crush washer. Bike is currently raised up to get the rear wheel off so I'm able to see properly rather than feel, I've cleaned everything off and will investigate tomorrow to see if I can find the source.

Not my 16T, just a random picture I pulled from the site, I'm sticking with stock 15/48T. Although it's not very good for the road and not very good off road, I think it's about the best you can get if you frequently do both, which I do.

Anyone remember the days when you flipped a sprocket over as it got worn and took links out of chains to extend their life when the adjusters couldn't cope anymore :confused:

Holding the old chain yesterday persuaded me that that definitely isn't a good idea... It's longer than I am tall and weighs quite a lot. I really don't want that snapping next to my foot, thanks!

Examination of the drain plug leak today shows that it almost certainly came from the drain bung. New crush washer sometime then :)

I had a chain snap at 80MPH on a CB250RS many years ago. Not a very pleasant experience I can tell you.

Mind you it wasn't as bad as what had caused the chain to snap! It was fitted with a 305cc big bore kit and the conrod protested by way of the little end opening up and becoming detached from the piston. The conrod flailed around inside the engine and smashed three holes in the crankcase, one in the front, one in the top and a long one in the bottom. That's when the chain gave up!

36years ago, south of France, chain has stretched soooo much, I took 4 links out of it before the journey home; used a hammer and a few nails borrowed from the campsite handyman, sprocket was seriously worn out!:p

Nessmuk... I take it you didn't bother to rebuild the motor :rolleyes:
