Hi all
Quick question, is hi-beam on headlights a legal requirement?
Could you have a dip-beam setup only?

Cheers, Chris

This is from the MOT manual.
A motor bicycle is only required to have a dipped-beam headlamp (but may also have a main beam) if it:
. was first used on or after 1st May 1995 and cannot exceed 30 mph / 50 kph with an engine capacity not exceeding 50cc. or
. was first used before 1 January 1972 and with an engine capacity of less than
50cc.
. any machine having a maximum speed not exceeding 50km/h/30mph
So it depends on your bike.

So, in summary, anything bigger or faster than a scooter does not require a dipped headlight....? And on any motorcycle a main-beam is optional?

Doesn't quite seem right somehow..?
Is this where the whole 'daylight MOT' thing comes from?

I think (and note a big think) that there mustn't be a headlight at all to get a daylight MOT, including the wires, switches and reflector etc....

I could be wrong as I am not very sure..

It means that a bike with a maximum speed of 50 KPH only needs a dipped beam, any bike faster needs a proper Hi Beam headlight.
