I recently came across a good deal on a 1990 XR200R but the engine needs completely rebuilt. The previous owner didn't know anything about engines and it shows. He must have tried to rebuild the engine at one point and really messed it up.

The timing chain was very worn and was rubbing in the case. Upon disassembly of the engine I noticed that this area was almost completely gone. It looks to me like the peice serves no gneral purpose but to protect the case in the event of chain failure. The top picture is what it is supposed to look like and the bottom is the part in question.

I have no access to the part. Would you guys use it?

I'd try the damaged part & see how it goes. It dosn't look like it's a substantial support piece that's broken off.
