When I brake I sometimes get a slight knock from the steering assembly.

So, the bearings are not behaving. It is only occasional, not very pronounced but I have the longest trip for a while planned for July: 2 weeks around France. (Since moving to Estonia my annual mileage has dropped from 30k to about 3k!! Hence why this will be a long one by my current standards!!)

I can either tighten or replace. I have never done either, but obviously tightening would be a bit eaiser.

So what do you recommend as my next step?

Regardless what you suggest, any tips on how to do it appreciated!!

Tighten. If they feel rough or notchy then replace.

There. Suggested both :)

@rse.

It looks like replacement is in order...

I tightened them, but they now feel notchy in the middle. I'm going to slacken them a smidge and see if it is better, but if notchiness exists even if a bit on the tight side, then clearly the bearing face is no longer pristine....

That's just it: not really, no!!

This is not what I had budgeted for: none of it.

The clutch started to slip at top end revs about 300miles ago, head race started to knock about 150 miles ago, and the disc was iffy already.

It's just not cricket, I tell you!

Dread to think what is next...
