Hi all
i’m in the middle of restoring a 1988 RD03 from Switzerland.
looking for the square headlight cowl and a tank.
both need to be in good condition and not in need of painting. I already have both parts but the bike has been given a crazy paint colour so it might cost me more to restore what I have compared to buying something else.

thanks

Not anything like as good as yours, my base point was very low but I have poweder coated the frame, subframe, all the black fairing and cowl antlers. The wheels are fully rebuilt on original rims. I have good plastics so if I can get a decent cowl and tank, happy days.

Looking nice, and you have two! 😉. That old paintscheme hurts my eyes.

Did you paint the engine? What color did you use for the side covers?

And wheel rims powdercoated? The gold color looks a bit too dark for a original. I’m going to do the same, got the wheel hubs painted and sourced OEM rims. Still need to be laced.

Mine was pretty bad aswell, though the plastics are oké.

Yeah I have another 88 Japanese bike which is pretty clean. Done around 58000km.
for the Swiss bike, no I didn’t worry about the engine, it’s pretty clean so for now anyway, I’m going to leave it alone. The bronze/gold side case colour is the same as Honda used on some of their HRC trials bikes. I had a 1985 RTL250S that had the covers freshened up and a mate in Brisbane did them. Since then another friend told me about a cerokote product which I think is what you’re looking for. I’ll do some more research.
the wheels are not painted, they were sent to an anodising company and they removed the old colour and then polished the alloy before re anodising them. I agree they are bright but they have come up better than new. Here’s a close up. The spokes are all original Honda, I laced them myself on a simple jig. It’s quite easy just go round every fourth spoke then jump one, go round again very fourth spoke, then jump again and so on. 7A4A8336-6543-45B8-9D7C-51465910C64F.jpeg 7CCDCAD9-5779-4EB6-9C89-87BB7EF61A9F.jpeg F9164AB4-8932-4F96-9A95-98B485AC20FF.jpeg

Ok, I did some research since it’s 48 Degrees outside and way too hot to do anything else...!
I think the product you need is Cerakote H-148 Burnt Bronze.
There are some specialist applicators in Holland (I think this is where you are ?)
Good luck.

Thanks for the info! I was looking into powdercoating but had not found the correct powdercoat color yet. I will look into this.

Those wheels look awesome, I was thinking about re-anodising but I read that the costs could be pretty high (de-anodise, polishing and anodising) due high labor costs. Also I have some pretty good rimz so I think I’ll skip the anodizing.
Do you have more tips about the lacing? Used two micrometers for axial en radial play I reccon?

The jig is just a cheapie from the states, it has a pointer that you use for both lateral and radial run out.
I don’t think you will need super high precision. The manual says plus or minus 2mm is acceptable. I got mine to less than 1mm. D136E945-4B05-4EC7-9B01-BD86F0962663.jpeg
