Flying back from SE Asia last week got talking to a Malaysian guy who works in the rubber industry. He reckons they have almost perfected a new rubber compound that never wears out! Apparently the boffins have identified some natural enzymes, which, when added to the latex, react with one kind of natural bacteriia (there are bacteria in everything) present in the rubber tree, produce some kind of chain reaction - cells splitting. That kind of thing.
From a bikers aspect you have to imagine that as you ride the tyre heats up, setting off this chain reaction so that any wear is offset by a regeneration of the rubber. They haven't yet got it perfected. As you can imagine balacing the growth against wear is going to be tricky but we can all see the potential in this.
By all accounts the big tyre manufacturers are falling over themselves to get their hands on the technology. My guess is that who ever gets hold of the patent will sit on it. Tyres that last for ever? They'd be fools to put that idea into practice.
