The official story is to run engine for a couple of minutes and check with dipstick not screwed in , but personally with the FX 650 (same bike older design) i check it after it had has time to settle after a run ,

The thing is, it's a dry sump and there's all kinds of valves in the oil lines to keep the oil from running back, and if one of them is dodgy the oil tank can drain straight back into the sump.

This basically means:

If you measure it cold first thing in the morning and the oil level shows something reasonable, then it's fine to check it cold.

If it shows nothing on a cold engine it still might be ok and the simplest way to know is to run the engine. This is indeed a bit scary. :)

(The other way to check is to open the crankshaft cap in the left hand engine cover. If you end up with a mess on the floor it had enough oil in it after all.)

The best way is to check it hot, after giving it a minute or so to settle. I often checked if after paying for petrol, at first...
