Summary:
Changes to moped and motorcycle training to make sure newly-qualified riders are better prepared for riding on modern roads.

Should motorcyclists be able to upgrade their licence to ride larger bikes by taking a training course, instead of having to take more tests ?

This consultation asks for views on changes to improve moped and motorcycle training in Great Britain.
The proposed changes for riders are to:

• take away (revoke) compulsory basic training (CBT) certificates of riders who get 6 penalty points
• introduce a training course for riders to upgrade their motorcycle licence, instead of passing extra tests
• restrict riders to riding an automatic motorcycle if they take their CBT course on one
• consider introducing a theory test that has to be taken before (or as part of) the CBT course
• change the CBT course syllabus from 5 parts to 4

There are also proposed changes to:
• improve the motorcycle instructor qualification process
• improve the way training courses are quality assured
• introduce an ‘earned recognition’ scheme for motorcycle training schools

• move the recording of CBT courses from a paper-based system to a digital service

forget all that, the single one thing that would improve safety is to prevent people riding on L plates for more than 2 years.

the roads here in london are FULL of L-plate riders who are a menace to everyone.

Not everyone lives in London and bus drivers ,taxi drivers and cyclists are just as big a menace in London as mopeds with L plates are.
I for one dont want my son jumping onto a bigger bike until he has learned to ride a bike bigger than the 125 he rides now and proved he can pass a required test...(once he has fixed it)
There is much more traffic on the roads than there was when us older members took our tests and I can remember how mad I got when I moved up from my 125 to a RD350 back in 1975.
My son is restricted to 12bhp for two years then 33bhp when he moves up to a bigger bike.
Dying young on a bike too powerful is not something I want for my son and we all know that the politicians that make these decisions for us only have our best interests at heart....:clown::clown::clown:......right?

cyclists maybe, but generally taxi drivers and bus drivers are better, as they have at least been required to pass a proper practical driving test and a highway code test.

the CBT is a joke, you ride around a few cones every two years and you're away. people are using this as a loophole to avoid passing a proper driving test

Agreed . At the end of the day if you put an idiot on a bike they are still an idiot...put em on a bigger bike , they are dangerous idiots on a bigger more dangerous machine. A lot is down to the individuals on these CBT courses and what they take away from the course. There should be more education and hard hitting stats regarding motorcycle accidents where showboating was the main contribution. I am sure we have all seen this day in-day out.:thumbleft::thumbleft::thumbleft::thumbleft::thumbleft::thumbleft::thumbleft:

I would make every car learner driver have compulsory hour riding pillion through city traffic.
If that didn't raise awareness, I don't know what would.
