Im planning on sampling a few trails in the Peaks next Sunday. No set route yet, havent been trail riding in the Peaks yet so more of an explorative trip.
So unless someone more knowledgeable comes along then it will mean a bit of map reading, maybe a bit of walking some unknown tracks and trying what I can. I have marked up the White and Dark Peaks OS maps with all the trails but I have no idea whats good or not.
Not planning on being out too long, a few hours should do it, happy to start early (party on Saturday night so hoping to take it steady) but really want to be back mid afternoon (wife giving me grief about going out on the bike too much.....and Im in the process of planning an adventure weekend in November so have to tread carfeully) so will probably turn round from wherever I get to approx 14:00ish for the ride home.
My rear wheel should be ready to put back on the bike on Tuesday / Wednesday, then I need to put new brake fluid in the rear brakes. With mine boiling yesterday and losing braking suggests it needs to be replaced.
Thanks Hudders, I asked Len a similar question a few months ago, and done a bit of searching through old XRV posts as well. So I pretty much know the tracks I want to do, just never done them before.
Was thinking of starting on the Houndkirk Road (done this before in a 4x4...but 10 years ago - was New Years day with a heavily pregnant wife. She wasnt too pleased when we nearly got the car stuck...no tools to dig out, no one around as it was New Years day....and the baby came 10 days later!!! She wasnt too please, it was supposed to be a leisurly drive).
Then working West, going down Stanage Edge (read that this is OK). Onto Chapel Gate....will probably dismount and walk to see what its like before going down.
Then there was a mention in one of the posts about Roiche Clough. Cant see this on my map, but there is a Rorch Clough. Maybe the same, anyway, said experienced only so may walk this one first as well.
Hopefully end somewhere around Buxton. Seems to be a fair amount of trails.
Still to decide on route. But its either West to East, or East to West.
Nice one Sam, will put a posting up later with the route, almost finalised it now.....and timings incase you can come along. Where in Manchester do you live? N, S, E or W. Will meet you somewhere en route (thinking McDonalds at the end of the M67 heading towards the Peaks - do you know it?).
AckAckFlack - if you can make it (depends on Friday I suppose as well:thumbrightthen we will meet you over towards West Sheffield. Will post later with route, meet places and timings. (was thinking of starting at the Fox House Inn on the A6187 just East of Hathersage, near Houndkirk Moor (just West of South West Sheffield)). The first track starts on the moor near the pub. Will post location later.
Meet at the McDonalds at the end of the M67 (heading to the Peaks from Manchester). Its on the right when the motorway ends. Postcode SK14 3AU. At 08:45. If fuel is needed probably best to top up here, I dont know where any fuel points are past here.
Set off for the ride over the Snake Pass and on to the Fox House Inn. This is on the A6187 to the East of Hathersage and West of South West Sheffield. Near Houndkirk Moor. Postcode S11 7TY. At 09:30 (RAC route planner says its 27 miles from the McDonalds and recons it will take 50 minutes). Never done the route but Id be surprised if it takes longer than 45 mins??????
Start the trails, 1st will will be the byways over Houndkirk moor. From here its a short ride to the tracks over Stanage Edge. Then theres a longish section to the South of Castleton. Then a bit over Mam Tor before heading to the top of Chapel Gate. Then theres a fairly long track at the bottom of Chapel Gate. Time permitting theres a few more tracks on the East of Buxton. Havent done any of these tracks before so not sure what to expect (With the exception of Houndkirk Road which is a rocky track over the moor)
14:00 -14:30ish is the cut off point....and then the ride home from where ever we get to.
Hi Mike.. M67 McD..is perfect.. (I know the place). There is a petrol station on Hyde road (A57) BY End of the M67, Just over the Round about, Next one is in Glossop heading that way..
Cheers..
Nice one Sam. Looking forward to it. Must restrain myself from drinking too much tomorrow night!!!!
