My RD7A (2003) is backfiring every time i close the throttle to engine brake. Going down a long downhill on the way to work early in the morning i'm capable of waking all the dogs.. blue flames out the back is spectacular but not quite civilized..

The bike has a leo vince pipe, and i am struggling to get the mixture right as it fouls the front cyl plugs on occasion, (causing a limp back home on 1 cyl on occasion.)

I am guessing that the bike is running overly rich, but am not entirely sure if it's the only reason... Carbs are set fairly lean at the moment, and the plugs still fouling a bit is mystery at this stage. Worn idle jets? (Guessing as i have not had the bike for long and at this stage am still getting to know it)

Under load the bike seems to run fine.

Any advice / is this a normal occurrence?

Check your exhaust and intake for air leaks.

Leaking exhaust seals will cause backfires on overrun as they allow air to be sucked in to the hot exhuast and it detonates.

Leaks on the intake cause lean mixture which causes detonation in the cylinder ( not good at all) and popping.

once you are sure there are no leaks then look at jetting
