Discussion Starter #1
Hi, I have a 2001 XL1000 and the starter motor can be very slow or will not turn. The battery current is good 11.6 to 12.6 and there is no particular reason for it not starting i.e. Temp as hot or cold makes no difference. I have changed the starter relay solenoid due to the previous one being burnt out melting the fuse.

Does it sound like the starter motor or could it be something else?
Should I just replace the starter motor or can the bushes be changed?
How do you remove the starter and the bushes?
Is it a simple job?

Thanks for any help.

Regards
The Hunter

You mention battery voltage but if this is taken with little or no load then the numbers are pretty much meaningless. Take some more measurements but take it this time take them while cranking the engine over. If you operate the kill switch it will still crank on the starter but wont start.

If they are low then you have a battery / charging problem. If they are still ok then then check the voltage at the starter motor while cranking.
If it's still good then you have have a duff starter (or poor engine earth) if its bad then you have a poor connection in the battery > solenoid > starter path.

AS Boris says plus it could be Corroded connections.
Try the easy things first.
