I’m working down in Dorset and thinking of hiring a van to collect my bike one weekend, rather than spend 6 hours on the train and then 5 hours back mostly on motorways. It also means I can bring another suitcase of bits and pieces with me, I work at sea so spend months away at a time.
Can I fit a 650 in a Berlingo, or do I need a Vivaro/Transit? I’m happy to remove the screen, mirrors etc, but don’t want to take the wheels off. I’ve read of people putting bikes in cars, but tbh hiring a van is actually cheaper than a car, and not much more than the train fare.
I got mine, minus the screen into one of those new VWcamper vans- a T5 I think- it was very hard to get it up the ramp and in though- took two of us and a lot of grunting- it was with a flat rear tyre on a motorway at night though!
Looks possible then, and I guess I can power it in the van (on my own) and gravity will help get it out. If I do this I’ll photostory it for your enjoyment/education.
I would've thought it'd be worth the extra to get a proper bike courier to deliver it....cost me £100 for a TA600 from central London to Bolton...prolly cost me that in fuel and large cappuchinos to ride it back.
Please include daily recovery updates from any hernias sustained...
It looks a squeeze getting the bike in a Berlingo! Presumably it didn have a bulkhead?
Go for a swb Transit/Vivaro etc for ease although a bike courier was a good suggestion and probably the cheapest option unless you have lots of other stuff to relocate!
I’m going home anyway for a couple of days, so I’m only looking at the additional cost compared to a rail fare. I might just look at the weather nearer the time and plan to ride back, but motorways are so boring on a bike and to detour will take too long.
