Hi guys any fellow wagon drivers out there, i,m back on the wagons at the weekends, to earn abit of cash for my upcoming wedding, wrking for an agency mainly hauling for samworth bros, (Ginsters).
I,ve got over ten years of tramping under my belt plus european, but I havnt had to use a tacho for over five years, so I got myself one of those new fangled digi tacho cards, never done the digi course but never afraid to admit when I dont know something or to ask a bone question, so got a crash course in the how to subject by another driver.
Now i,m good to go and have been for a couple of months now, my question is, PERIOD OF AVAILABILTY, I was told not to worry about it too much, so I dont, I just use drive mode rest or other wrk.
So can anyone enlighten me on how to use POA, wrk it out into your daily hours etc etc, What I do know is that it is when you turn up for a tip at a time and you are informed of the time that you will be tipped, the time between turning up and getting tipped is the POA.
Whats the point of it, with the old charts you either had a break, or put the mode swithch to other wrk, could someone enlighten me, cheers guys.

Hi there,
right POA is a grey area to most people....

my definition as used on the Containers were we have loads of POA time is....

when you arrive at a delivery/collection point ask how long it will be before loading/unloading commences , if its longer than 15mins put on POA as it must be periods of duration of 15mins.

Also you are technically available for work but not actually working but get paid:D . At the end of the day add up the POa times .

eg you drive for 3hrs then 30mins poa then drive for 4.15mins [new digi card regs not 4.30] have a 50mins break , then start next duation of say 2hrs then 3 hrs Poa then 2.15 hrs driving before another break.

Also the breaks must be in 15mins +30mins not the old 3x 15mins the road haualge assossiation have some good info on their web sites , there are 2 diff digireaders most use the same . I`d just ask for some quick instructions they are quite simple and yiu can tell how long you`ve been driving and can do a Tesco print out at anytime.

Personnaly I`d do 2 prints at end of shift one for yourself the other for the Ginster boys, oh and get it downloaded/read by them at end of week to keep them sweet.

have you got your" Yorkie bar " :sign5:

Tramp mate many thanks for the info , as usual it all looks mega difficult on the surface but as you look it makes sense, I,m quite lucky with samworths as they are mostly trunk runs with a delivery on the end, all trailer swaps are generally at their own depots so everything moves along sweetly. The bloke who took me for my evalation drive (they dont take just anybody on you know) told me not to worry about about the poa too much as it can realy confuse the days timings. But I need to know just to have the knowledge.
Yep I do multiple printouts, 1 for samworths, 1 for the agency and 1 for me. My digicard gets read/downloaded by samworths after every shift, they are mega on the ball and wont let anyone go over hours etc, which is good, but before if I was out of time (9hrs driving)i,d crack on if it was ony for a few miles but now as i,m tracked etc etc they make us take an exta 45min break then start into the final1hour driving to get home.
I used to be on containers (boxes) out of southampton (Nursling Ind Est) I started out on Mitsui Lines on the agency (licence to print money) then I was taken on full time by Roadways Container Logistics, And back then it was the best driving job i,d had. own cab good tackle nights out good money etc etc.
Who did/do you wrk for now mate.

Transporter- I`m on the agency round here worked for most of the container guys:( 4 years ago we got £12 @hour now lucky to get £8 but no nights out at that rate. . The good old days are over:mad: but the trucks are getting better I drive the nice Volvo`s normally but the new Mercs are a dream to drive with fully auto everything just sit back and stear.

Bit off topic BUT If your looking for trucking work try Tulip at Bodmin i was trying to transfer to that factory but i'm not sure about it at the moment. The garages are up there and the transport division when i was talking to them they said they can't get enough drivers and if i got my license they would guarantee me a job on the lorries, that was last year though and said wages were around £30k various shift patterns

Cheers Kymmy youve been a great help, am downloading it now, sorry I didnt get back to you last night, I was working my proper job.
Tramp, lookslike the wages have dropped all round, I get £12 per hr on a sat and £14 on a sunday, normal day rate is like yours only £8 or there abouts, but its not difficult wrk like you all the wagons at samworths are full auto, god they even do alight check for you at a push of a button, no more trying to see if your brake lights are wrking by putting your bag on the brake pedal and running to the back to have a look.
Jason cheers for the info, nice to know some firms still know how to pay their drivers thats a mighty fine wage for this end of the country, thats got to be on par with the lies of samworths.
