thanks for that ds99, if still available what would be the main points to check other than the usual old bike stuff?

rotten/pitted wheels (expensive to replace), rusty exhausts (especially on inside near top of tyre), odd noises from the engine (knocking, rattling), chain worn out (wheel will be adjusted far back), front sprocket worn out and hence welded on (walk away)

don't forget two new tyres fitted will cost £200 and a new chain and sprockets will cost £150+, so factor that into to any negotiation

Well, unfortunately I was pipped on this one - was all set to go & view too.
Will keep looking - only interested in a 600 & pref. not newer than a '96 with not too many miles up.

the 650s are quite good value now. you can pick one up for £1,400. they have more power, are better for motorways, more comfy.

I hear you regarding 650 vfm but I already have a no. of bikes (2005 BMW F650GS & '83 R80ST, '03 Hinckley Bonnie, '01 W650, '80 XS650, '75 T500, '69 Triumph 500, '05 DR250) so it isn't really about value. I do need to sell one as run out of space. I want a bike to do Spanish classic bike rallies (pre '88 preferably but pre '95 ok) 2-up with luggage. The R80ST was bought for that purpose recently & I like it but a bit cramped 2 up. Of course the rally was cancelled this year. Anyway, just always liked the original TA's. Like the AT as well but perhaps a bit heavy for my 10 stone build.

another Devon bike - maybe 40 minutes away but I don't think I have the skills to rescue this one. Watching though.

The ad says that it does also come with the original silencer

I phoned re the Anniv. model - they had just taken a deposit. Going to Newcastle I think he said. Obviously not meant to be. Am thinking maybe a 650 now after all. Mmm, dunno!

yeah, good 600s don't hang around long, not in this weather too

plenty of 650s around, they are not as desirable, and values have probably bottomed out for the older models now

I managed to edit some older posts yesterday that I was previously unable to edit since the new site format.
