I’ve had some stick about accidents I have over the years on THIS THREAD post No. 169, so I decided to start a new thread in the chatter section. Please add your experiences.

My Accidents worthy of a mention.
  • About 1983, driving down a country lane, near Swindon, in a left hand drive car. An uninsured lunatic came racing round the corner smashed straight into me. I called the cops. He agreed that I wasn’t to blame etc. As the other car was more on my side of the road than his own. I had to get my car fixed on my own insurance to drive back to Germany.
  • About 1985, same car, in Germany, at a cross roads, some jerk ran a red light and drove straight into my front right wing.
  • Two days after accident No. 2, some woman reversed out of a parking place without looking and took out my front left wing. ( each driver’s insurance paid for a new bumper, bonnet, and labour though, so that was a nice little earner)
  • 1993Driving a truck in Germany, one way street, 2 lanes, I was in the left hand lane and a ghost driver (ie. Driving the wrong way, down a one way street) came screaming towards me, I had just returned from a Holiday in UK and instantly thought I was driving on the wrong side of the road, I instinctively & quickly turned to change lanes and drove straight into the side of a BMW. Fortunately for me, the Kripo (German CID)were behind me in an unmarked car and witnessed the whole thing. So, yes I drove into the BMW but the ghost driver was billed for repairs.
  • 1994 Driving a truck in Holland, some cloggy decided he wanted to change lanes, only to find out he couldn’t do it by driving under the side of my truck.
  • 1993 got crushed whilst walking between my parked truck and another truck (driven by a mate) Cost me my spleen and a few other injuries.
  • My van has loads of small dents in it, most of which didn’t appear as I was driving!!!! They normally happen whilst reversing up to some stage entrance in the dead of night.

How did it reverse if you were not doing the driving?

  • 1989 too damned fast in Vauxhall Carlton. 'Will the tail swing out?' Yes. BANG! through a crash barrier into two trees
  • 1995 too damned fast in Fiat Tipo. BANG! Derbyshire wall destroys right side of car to prevent worse injury
  • 2008 filtering at 3mph on ZZR600, pedestrian walks from behind stationary bus on other side of road. OOF! bike dropped, still in gear. BANG!

Oh all right...

  • Sep 2002 - Bike fell over in parking lot, busted brake lever.
  • Jan 2003 - Diesel spill on roundabout exit in the rain. Rear wheel went walkies. Scratches, badly sprained ankle.
  • June 2004 - Locked the front sometime very AM in the pissing rain when I wasn't fully awake yet. Scratches, busted clutch lever & shifter.
  • Sep 2004 - Ditto, once late at night after riding 200ish km nonstop in the pouring rain. Nada damage.
  • Nov 2005 - Dog on narrow road doing a 90 degree turn when I was 10m away. Dog still works. Bike too, though this is the reason the dommie looks the way it does.
  • Jan 2006 - Late at night, caught out by black ice, 10 mph at most. Had to push the downed bike across the intersection on hands & knees cos I couldn't get it upright on the ice. Nearly got hit arse end first by a spinning 3-series 30 seconds later. Bad night to be out... No damage.
  • Jan 2009 - Honestly overcooked a roundabout when it was finally dry again after weeks of rain and snow: front wheel let go. Busted clutch lever & lost endcap for ToolTube.
  • Jan 2010 - Dropped the GS on completely iced over roads at 5 mph. Some clown in a landie was pushy and I had too much attention on him and not enough on riding a bike on ice. D'oh. Scratched a valve cover and destroyed a pannier.
(All but the last were on the dommie.)

various minor scrapes with the trucks over the years
apart from one suicidal pedestrian one night who succeeded to exit this world in front of my truck on a main road, it has been mainly minor dings and scrapes, trucks can be repaired the damage your head takes a lot longer

I shall be answering in full - as soon as DaveS has upgraded the sever to one with a memory large enough to cope.:D

Suffice to say the worse crash was when the good lady wife and I were back seat passengers in Spain, hit head on. It killed our driver, broke my wife's femur clean in half and her jaw and left her a dribbling wreck with a head injury.

A week in intensive care unconscious. Four months in hospital - specialist head injury unit. Social services for her and our son for six months (he was an "at risk" child)

My injuries (one that still niggles) were nothing by comparison.

Some people say I am the unluckiest person in the word. I reckon, given all that has happened and what a great life I live, they must be wrong. I must be the luckiest person in the world.:thumb:

1983 While riding home a car stopped at the side of the road, then as I passed it turned right, broken brake lever and bent footrest.
1985 On my way to work some twit reversed out of his drive without looking, I avoided the car ( it was a BMW ) I hit the kerb and buckled both wheels and broke the fairing.
1990 Sitting at a junction a car ploughed into the rear of my bike.
2007 While sitting at the end of my road waiting for a clear bit to pull out a car ran into the back of the bike.
