How easy is it to take the front forks off to replace the gaiters- mine are in a sorry state. It's not so much the taking off as putting back correctly so as not to muff up the handling?
Not bad, just a case of unbolting & reassembling everything.
There is a sequence for correct reassembly, something like;
Slide the forks into the yokes, nip up the bottom yoke pinch bolts, loosely fit the brace and mudguard, fit the front wheel leaving the spindle clamp slack then bounce the suspension to settle everything then nip up the spindle clamp (tighten top nuts first then bottom - don't go mad, a gentle nip up is enough or you will crack said clamp) then tighten top yoke, then mudguard then fit calipers.
To be fair, it's not 'that' critical to do it by the book but do make sure the forks slide into the yokes easily and the fork with the clamp isn't binding on the spindle before tightening.
Personally, I'd take the opportunity to change the fork oil when they are off and probably inspect/grease the steering bearings when everything is off but thats just me.
btw....you don't have to take anything apart to change the fork oil, just undo the small drain caps at the bottom and the oil drains out, then refill from the top
Easy enough job. Do one side at a time so that you have a reference. Run some lube into top and bottom yokes 24 hrs before. Crack but don't remove top nut while everything is tight. Not much pressure from spring behind. Good Sharp blow with wooden or rubber mallet will get them on there way. Make up a dipstick to measure oil level from top of forks and hang upside down for a while with some cleaner in there working to allow everything to run out. Hope this helps
Lazy me's way for new fork oil change..lift bike up at front from under engine, mudgaurd and bracket off, spring top caps off forks, bit of wood through spokes under discs, jack up front and fully compress forks, take springs out, bit of long welding wire down clear 5mm tubing to reach bottom and with a big syringe ,suck the oil out....only gets 510ml of the 549ml total out...but a lot less dismantling work...can still set level of oil between the two levels from the top if not even in each leg...let the front down from the discs, springs in, caps on,...ie nearly done..note sucking from the bottom draws any crap out first....BUT only any good if you have a nice collection of sturdy non leaking trolley jacks and level ground etc.....HAVE A MERRY XMAS EVERYONE
