hi so thinking of doing a week or so trip ths early april(next week), thinking across dover-calais and then maybe down across alps to the med coast and lake bled.

only time i have been to Europe is in summer, so whats the weather like at this time of year?

i will prob be camping most the way with the odd hotel so will be taking panniers full of gear.

just had new rear tyre, and need new rear disc, chain and sprockets which are being done next week. just need to top the scottoiler up and the bike is ready!

any advice would be great thanks! :D

Only advice I can offer is don't camp in the Alps this time of year unless you've got some good gear. The ski season will still be running until about mid April. I went 2 years ago to Chamonix in April and it was -7c camping in the valley.

Other than that have fun.

A week or so? that seems like a mighty trip for a week or so. It will still be very cold at altitude and I'd expect wetness. I find a big plastic bag with arm holes and a head hole very good under my JTS coat. Keep your extremities warm and if you have a stove lot of brewing is good. Have a nice trip.

I think you'll struggle to keep up the miles you're expecting, especially in the Alps, those twisties can have you sticking to 1st and 2nd gear for miles on end, 100 mile days are not unheard of when the roads get twisty!

I've seen cold in July in the Alps, I'm speaking tent white with frost! Make sure you take plenty of warm clothing and a good sleeping bag. A good few of the passes will still be closed due to snow so take it easy over there.
Hopefully someone locally can give you a better indication of the weather for next month in the regions you've asked about. Good luck mate.

thanks for the advice so far, so defo will be wrapping up warm!

thinking of really a couple days motorway down to slovinia and lake bled, then take it east for a few days with small miles and maybe down to croatia coast, before we head back up.

i make it only 900 miles from Calais to Bled so can do that in 2 days hastle free on the might VARA :p

anyone know much about the weather in slovina/croatia at this time of year and also campsite availabilty across Europe at this time?
thanks

I agree on that one big time after seriously overestimating the mileage I could do each day off motorways last August. I found that I had to use m'ways most days to get the distances covered. Dunno about others, but I do not think that m'ways are why I ride!! :thumbright:

i certainly dont like just motorways! really enjoy A roads and from experience after a 150-200 mile day i was completly exhausted on the alps twistys :D

but my plan is bash motorways for say 2 days, relax take it easy for a few days then head back, if i feel the miles are too much i can cut them down and go some where else! i have no fixed route/plan/destination :D

so also any nice places to visit this time of year?

thanks

It looks as if you are doing it the right way though, with plenty of flexibility. A Michelin map and a weather forecast... :)

been to Slovenia and Bled:cool: the site there is excellent as are showers , central heating as its COLD then and very quite dont really get going to mid May, you got to go up to Lake Bohinge and Vintnor Gorge -do a goggle search.

For peace and quite and solitude it cant be beaten as are the excelllent roads, But BE VERY CAREFULL :angel5::angel5::angel5: as the slovenian`s dont like looking left into oncoming traffic before pulling out on you,.

I know because they T boned me and the misses ,both okay but bike wrote off and right outside the Police station in Bled to took 18mnths to sort out claim.

If you have a sat nav there is a download for slovenian roads foc on the web, as also a member on here too:confused:.

As already stated it`ll be cold going down and some of the Alps roads still shut , OH try to get to Piran on the Adriatic coast 5hrs from Bled and well My heart is still there:D

Also in Bled try the crazy downhill sled ride CRAZYYYY
