Spent the weekend camping in Betws-y-coed with a few of mates. Did lots of riding around the area but found 1 particular route of interest. The following place names are taken from multimap - the route is easly identifiable from there. In addition I cannot confirm that this is a "legal" route however we saw no signs to the contrary. Route as follows:
From the head of Lake Vyrnwy (a good loop on its own) take the Hirnant Pass road from Rhiwargor to Rhos-y-gwaliau. A couple of miles up this road, after the first section of forrestry, there is an unpaved road to the right leading up through farm & moorland (on multimap this appears just inside the Snowdonia park border). After a few miles of gentle climbing, it turns back towards the forrest on your left. From there head into the forest and wind in and out of the valleys on well formed and well used forestry roads. There is obviously recent logging activity in the area so be careful. We were there on Sunday afternoon and saw no other vehicles in about 2 hours. Generally – all roads that head downhill will eventually end up back on the Hirnant Pass Road. Have fun exploring but be carefull!
The roads are all unpaved but in good condition, the twins handled it well 2-up.
Another great road passes on the other side of this forest. The B4391 from Bala to Pencraig passes up a steep section through forest, across farm & moorland at the top, and then winds down a very scenic & steep sided valley.
On our way back to London we got from Betws-y-coed to Stratford via:
A5, B4501, B4391, B4580, A490, A489, A49, A456, B4204, & A422. All great roads & avoiding dual carriageway.
Next trip – Mid Wales.
