Its a great idea for a ride out and with more notice (months) i reckon you would get a good few takers willing to be led around wales and camp with you. Perhaps call it "extreme Wales" and plan on going to the furthest N/S/E/W points plus the tips of the main peninsulars - Gower, Pembroke, Lleyn, and whatever it is on Anglesey.

But, too many major A roads. I am no expert on the roads in Wales but I know there is a wealth of B roads and back lanes that could be joined into a fab route.

Just some thoughts. Enjoy the trip it sounds great however you do it.

Ignore the M4 to jct 24, take the M48 across the old bridge, then come off at jct 2, A466 past Chepstow, B4235 to Usk, B4598 to Abergavenny - you will not be disappointed ;)

The A449 is the most boring piece of concrete dual-carriageway known to man

Your passing so many great roads but they will take you away from your planned route try these

From Abergavenny to Brecon try turning off the A40 at Crickhowell and ride the B4558 follow the canal and you wont have power rangers flying past you at 140

On the B4518 turn off left half way along and head for Dylife and over to Machynlleth and then you can do A487 to Dolgellau

Thanks Guys, I can see next week I may well be back to the drawing board. I fear too much of a fine country to get through in a few days, those google earth links and pictures makes a little voice in my head say I'm gonna find a nice area and not make it much further!
Perhaps a bit more notice might have made it an option for others, but to be honest it's only just been extended from an 'overnighter' (short lead and little kids lol) and felt like a long way off, ten all of a sudden just next week (sound familiar to anyone) I accept it's a compromise and A roads will have to be a necessary evil of covering distance to allow me to fulfil the Grand Tour.
Do keep your 'gems' coming and I'll have a go at linking them all together.
