I have a donor engine in my xr250, its from a jap import, engine number md17e.
It doesn't have an oil cooler.
It is quite noisy from the top end, valve clearance are all ok, I've checked them as per manual.
What else could cause the noise, cam chain? Camshaft bearings? Or are these engines just rather rattly?

If you are sure its not the cam or valve clearances you probably looking at timing chain or little end if it gets to noisy all you can do is strip it down and check for wear. Just my opinion as I did a full rebuild on a xl250r was told it was rattling and it turned out big end and little end were shot so got it shimmed up at a local engine specialist.

Is it noisier when cold or is the same when hot ? - Could be piston slap if only when cold or if a drysump whilst the oil makes it way through the oil galleries.
Have you checked the cam chain / tensioner?
Does the engine have an auto compressor? - If it does you need to be sure the cam's in the correct position.

Hope the above helps.

Thanks for the replies. The noise gets worse as the engine warms up. I guess the only way to find out is to strip it down.
