Hi all

I'm new here, this is my first post. I have been an XR4 fan since bought a new one in 1999 that proved to be extremely reliable and trouble free. After having a few “modern” higher tech bikes I wanted to go back to the simple and rugged design of the XR4.

But now to the question:

Will running a 2003 XR400 with the lighting coil (stator) circuit open (disconnected) possibly damage the lighting coil (stator)?

I am talking about removing the regulator all together, leaving the lighting circuit open. So no current will flow but generated voltage will reach as high as it possibly can.

OK, thanks jamie92j.

I wanted to ask, just in case. In fact KTM sold some bikes with a unconnected lighting coil in the stator (MXC i think) to make it easier to add lights. So it is OK for the kokusan electrics KTM uses. I don't know what Honda uses for the XR4. In theory it should be possible for a stator to burn if the voltage it produces is higher than the internal isolation in the stator can handle. I have never heard of that happening though...
