Hi all,

I used to own an XL600R many moons ago and am feeling the urge to ride again.
I have been looking at XR650r's in the UK, not many about and ideally I would like a key ignition, steering lock, lights, indicators, mirrors and most of all an electric start which the R's do not come with as standard.

I was looking on Google and notice they have the XR650 L in the USA which have all the things I am after.
I actually think it will suit me better as I will be using it 80% on the road and 20% greenlaning.

So I had a few questions that I would appreciate your experience on.

If I managed to find a private seller or trader in the USA willing to crate securely and ship the bike over (I would pay the shipping fees in full of course) to either Plymouth, Portsmouth or Southampton would I have to pay import tax? If so how much?

Can I then register the bike with the DVLA without any problems?

Will I still be able to insure the bike?
I was amazed how cheap 1 years fully comp is on a XR650R now.

No point me going to all that expense if I wont be able to get a V5 or reasonably priced insurance.

Thanks for any help.

Are you sure you know your Ls and Rs:icon_smile: There is a nice L on Biketrader but its overpriced I think ÂŁ4500!!!! And its just a naked dommy really or a better 600. There are loads of Rs for sale here in UK????

Yes.

That L on biketrader is what I am after but as you say it's overpriced.
Might go and take a look at it tomorrow and dribble over it anyway.

Where are all the UK R's advertised?
I have only looked on ebay, motorcycle news, Autotrader, exchange and mart.

Thanks for the response phil.

Been to loads of motorcycle shops today. No XR's R or L but they all took my number in case they hear of any.

What they did have was,

XT600E 2002 7000 miles, electric start, only 29BHP apparently,
XL600R 1987 30000 miles 44BHP
DRZ400SM 2007 26,000 miles
FMX 650-5 2007 2000 miles electric start 37BHP, horrible little wheels.

Year is not so important with me, I am after a low mileage bike.

Does the XR650R have 44BHP?

Not sure what they have but plenty enough, I would guess in standard for it about right but easy to de-restrict>

Just my 2p worth

I definitely wont be importing an XR, too much hassle and expensive with shipping costs, VAT, handling charges, registering it etc.

I know the XR650R is a superior bike but like I said I will be on the road 80% of the time and off 20% so the XR650L would have suited me better.
The one I have found is ÂŁ4600 with 6000 miles on the clock which is ridiculous.
I can get a 2002 model XR650R that has never been used or registered for ÂŁ4150.

So I have decided to either get an XL600LM or RMG both of which are electric start. 1987 though so quite old.

Or get a TTR600R 2003 0r 4 around ÂŁ2500 with under 3000 miles on the clock.
They have 42BHP the XL 44 BHP. more than the XR650L

I know the XR650R would leave both those bikes standing but I wont be racing and I was happy with my XL600R many years ago.

UKRob, I was trying to find posts of TTR600's and see that 2 of your tall mates have them.
What do they and you think of them? Not compared to an XR but XT's XL's DR's etc.
