Quick question about valve clearance

I am planning on checking my valve clearances tomorrow. If I understand the Haynes correct, this is done without draining oil? Is this correct?

Thank you.

No problem

Search the site on the topic for tips as well mate.

I found it useful to remove the cam covers (the front will lift up to give access but won't come out all together) rather than try and do the valves through the inspection covers.

Another question (your help is really appreciated!) - the manual gives the clearances - but they are all between something and something (min and max value?) - which is better - do I go for the smaller or the greater value?

Yip - I know I am doing this the wrong way around, but by now I am really good at this balancing of the carbs thing - I think I will open a shop here and make my millions.. :D. Thanks for the tip - will look at that when I get started - must tell you that with my new cheap vacuum gauges, the balancing act became a lot easier and a lot more accurate. Bike goes nicely now - but as I am in the process of tinkering with everything (getting to know that bike..), I might as well check the valves, which might just give me that extra little bit of smooth I still sense is lacking

When measuring the valve clearances, anything in the "min-max" range is acceptable, so if they are already within these tolerances, don't touch them.

I've never done the clearances on mine, but by all accounts it can be a bit of a bitch. Do a forum search and see what you come up with.

The reason the engine must be cold (letting it cool down overnight is recommended) is that obviously metal expands, and this will affect any measurement you take. All quoted clearances will be from a cold engine.

If you are gonna do it, my only other tip is to remove all the spark plugs, as this will enable you to turn the engine over MUCH easier (by putting it on the centre stand, putting it in gear, and turning the rear wheel)

i just did mine abuot 2 weeks ago. It is a crap job. I found it hard to find TDC then all of a sudden i found it, ie when you can feel play in all the valves in the cylinder you are working on. As for the min and max, the feeler guage i had covered a wide range and went up in 0.05mm each time so it gave me feelers right in the middle of the ranges for the inlet and exhaust valves. I didn't take the cam covers off, but it is rather tricky to get the feelers in where they are to go so it might be easier with the covers off. Out of the 6 valves i only needed to adjust 2, one was too tight and one too lose.

Have fun!
