I've recently purchased a new Honda front sprocket and chain and a Wemoto rear sprocket.

Got them all on this lunchtime, used my new chain tool to put it all together and using all the power in my puny arms got it all together

But...

Having put the chain together it now seems that it the chain's a bit long - the wheel will be at the furthest adjustment, not allowing any future adjustment.

Whilst I can grind off a couple of links, buy a new joining link and try again - another week lost - should this happen with an "official" Honda chain (i.e. have I been given the wrong length?)

Also, without running the engine it looks as if the chain is not smoothly fitting into the front sprocket teeth but "riding" down the top teeth to snugly fit the "11 o'clock" teeth. (I should post a video later) Is this a symptom of the wrong-sized chain or a symptom of a new chain?

I will put all this down to experience and try and hope to ride a bike again before the winter...

Looking at the haynes manual for the 600 alp the number of links went up from 118 to 120 for the 99 model.

If the front sprocket is the rubber cush type the chain will quickly bed down the side plates into the rubber and fit correctly, then it will appear even further extended on the adjustment.

Someone else will be along shortly and I will stand corrected on anything Iv'e said just trying to help.

Hi Giles,

easy answer to chain length ..just count the number of links in the old one..and adjust the new one to match...

I always order the chain buy the number of links..the chain will bed into the rubber easily as long as the chain is straight on the sprockets. check rear chain guide markers.

A new chain will sound well very quite compared to old one...did you use a new front sprocket retaing clip as they are consumable items and wear, also use locktite on the treads of the bolts as they can vibrate lose and only need a small nip to tighten.

hope this helps out.

Yeah, I think I was too excited to try out my new gadgets and play with my shiny new chain.

I'll grind the link off and start again. Another call to Honda, sigh :pale:

Tramp, yes, thanks to the advice here I bought a new retaining clip, and bolts, loctited it and torqued to 10Nm as per Haynes.

The rubbered Honda sprocket looks much better than the manky JT lump I have on my desk.

Cheers

before you go grinding links off I would make sure it is not going to be too short. Its a lot to take off is a whole link. I am pretty sure the TA650 is 118 links. The version of Haynes manual I have is wrong where it says how many links a 650 needs - I think it say 120 links. I am also pretty sure that Honda supplied chians are supplied over length. The best place I have bought chains from L&M in Hereford.

My 650 does have 118 links/pitches also my version of the haynes manual states 110 (figure that one!) He will need to remove at least two pitches to reconnect the chain.
Its my guess he has been supplied with a 120 pitch chain for the 1999 600 (if mr haynes has got that one right) think something even longer would not have fitted. Time will tell.

I've just popped out to the garage and according to the packaging + Google I have a 525x120.

Additional Googling suggests it should be 118.

I shall get a new DID 525 link and be less hasty in future...

Been there done that,I did exactly the same as you, ordered the chain and sprockets for my 1996 600 and put them straight on only to find out that the chain was 120 links, but as I had ordered a 16 tooth for the front instead of the 15 tooth I managed. We`re too eager thats our problem. :thumb::thumbup: :thumb::thumbup: :thumb::thumbup:
