Hey guys. I recently fitted a digital voltmeter on the dash as my battery has gone flat a few times.
I've had battery checked in a shop, and verdict was that its ok (Yuasa)
Recently fitted a new OEM Reg/Rectifier.
At tickover with lights off getting about 12.5 - 13.0 Volts
Switching on parking lights doesn't make a huge difference
However switching on Headlights (low or high beam) drops the voltage to about 11.2 Volts so battery discharging.
With lights on, revving to approx 2000RPM voltage picks up again to about 13volts.
Sitting on the motorway at between 75 and 80mph gives a steady voltage of 12.9 Volts

Question is....is it normal for battery to be discharging while on tickover with lights on?

If this isn't right, any ideas on what the problem might be?

I'm still on the original reg rect and battery

Battery 12.87v

With engine running lights off 14.4 and lights on 13.9

Thanks for the readings guys.... I've measured the resting battery voltage a few times now and it
seems a bit low (typically 12.3 Volts). I am wondering if the battery is not in the best health.
When the bike has been running a while and then switched off resting voltage is about 12.7 Volts.
I've started riding with only the parking lights on during the day now so haven't had to bump start
again. So probably get a new battery and see how things go.
Checked continuity between battery negative and frame and ok, and Open circuit between Positive
terminal and frame.
Did continuity checks on the stator, all seemed ok, and no phase shorting, so seems ok. Also did
an AC Voltage check as seen on youtube - what voltage should be appearing from the block connector
that connectes to reg/rectifier?

Just some input on the issue , I had problem with starter so couldn't figure out problem, strip starter still problem not fixed .
Then new problem with charging , so first thing I check regulater rectifier , had spare one , now effect , then checked solenoid ....connection completely melted .
So order new parts here couple links if any use to anyone , o bike is 90 rd4

check the battery leads/connection are solid & blah di blah. chances are its the battery. I've just replaced both R/R's on the twins, fried both batteries within a week. No problems since. I presume you've hard wire/soldered the 3 yellow wires, ie; 3pin plastic connector block removed?

it's a common fault, caused many a fried battery, reg/rec, alt/stator. I think i remember the connector melting on the solenoid, i heard/didn't hear the usual starter motor sound. After a removing :( & checking etc all was fine. maybe butt end of a hammer tap may have done the trick.
